If your car is not starting, your battery might be dead and you need to know how to jump a car. The problem is that many people do not know how to jump their car which can leave them stranded and having to call auto recovery. If you have jumper cables, you need to know what steps to take to set them up to ensure that they charge your battery.
Placing The Cars
To use jump cables, you will need to have a pair of jumper cables and a car that has a battery with a higher charge than your own. You will then need to place both of the vehicles into Park or Neutral before you set up the cables. You will also need to shut off both of these cars and ensure that the brakes have been engaged.
Setting Up The Positive Cables
Once the cars are ready, you will need to start with the positive cables. You should attach one of the red cables to the positive terminal of your battery. This will be indicated by either a plus sign or the word POS. The positive terminal is also bigger than the negative one.
You should then attach the other red clip onto the positive terminal of the other cars battery. It is important that you place the positive cable on the dead battery first and attach the second cable to the charged battery.
Setting Up The Negative Cables
Once the positive cables have been attached, you will need to attach the negative or black cables. The first step is to attach one of the black cables to the negative terminal on the other vehicles battery. It is important that you not place the black clip into your battery.
After doing this, you will need to attach the other black cable to an unpainted surface on the car which is not close to the battery. It is recommended that you use one of the metal struts that hold the hood up. You should not place the second black clip on the negative terminal of your battery.
Starting Your Cars
Once the cables have been placed, the working vehicle should be turned on. The engine should be allowed to run for at least 5 minutes to ensure that your battery is being charged. After this time, you should try starting your vehicle.
If your vehicle will not start after the first 5 minutes of jumping a car, you should continue to run the working engine for another 5 minutes. After this second period of time, you should try starting the car again. If the car does not start, your battery may be dead and have to be replaced.
If your car does start, you should not turn it off. You will need to remove the cables in the opposite order to how you set them up. After this, you will need to drive your car around for at least 15 minutes to ensure that your battery has been recharged.
